COIMBATORE GH IS NOW MERCURY-FREE, FIRST IN SOUTH INDIA.

There is conscious movement by hospitals worldwide to move away from Mercury, because of its toxic nature. Some of the hospitals in New Delhi have attained mercury free. Coimbatore GH has now become only the sixth Hospital in India to go Mercury free with the first five hospitals are in Delhi, Coimbatore General Hospital has become only the first hospital to attain this first outside New Delhi.

The Coimbatore district has initiated a movement at the behest of Dr P Umanath a medical doctor by qualification, to make the hospitals and the state run colleges Mercury free during last two months. 

Four more hospitals are attempting to be mercury free, while district administration has identified about 15 hospitals in the city to make them go Mercury free.

A drop of mercury from a thermometer can pollute a water body spanning 20 acres and it affects the reproductive and nervous systems.
