Tamil Nadu state government has come forward to set up monorail system in the expanded suburban areas of Chennai Metro city.
The tracks for the monorail will be laid above the existing roads.
As laying the track is not a difficult task, the monorail project will be executed in 3 stages.
Some changes have been made in the original plan.
- 1st phase – Vandalur-Velachery – 23 km.
- 2nd phase – Poonamallee-Kathipara Junction – 16 km.
- 3rd phase – Poonamallee-Vadapalani – 18 km.
The total distance in the monorail project is 57 km.
Vandalur-Velachery section will start from Vandalur Depot, Vandalur zoo, Perunkulathur, East Tambaram, Camp Road, and Medvakkam to reach Velachery. There will be 14 monorail railway stations.
Poonamallee-Kathipara section will start from Poonamallee depot, Gumananchavadi, Ramachandra Medical College, Porur, Ramapuram, and reach Kathipara. There will be 13 monorail railway stations.
Poonamallee-Vadapalani section will start from Poonamallee depot, Poonamallee, Gumananchavadi, Maduravoyal, Valasaravakkam, and then reach Vadapalani. There will be 11 monorail railway stations.
The state government floated a tender to entrust the project to a reputed international company of high quality.8 companies made their offers.
5 companies were selected in the first stage.
S L Infra Project has proposed to use the technology of the Malaysian company, Skomy, to implement the project.
A few banks have joined together to form ‘ILSS’ and on behalf of ‘Transport Network Limited’, laid a few roads in the state of Tamil Nadu. They have made an offer for the monorail project with the technology from a Chinese company.
These 2 companies have been selected for the final bid and whichever offers the lower price will be entrusted with the monorail project by Tamil Nadu state government.
These 2 companies are set to to present the cost to the government in a secretive manner during May.
The selected company will be given a contract to start the work from May itself.
However, as the project drafted plan has to be cleared by the Railway safety Commission before starting the project. Hence, activities to get this clearance certificate from Railway safety commission have been taken up.
Monorail project is totally different from Metro Rail project.
Monorail project can be executed even in places where traffic density is very high.
High-cost aspects such as acquisition of lands are not necessary for monorail project.
Laying of monorail track and maintaining it is very simple. Monorail coach wishes far less then metro train coach. Hence, it requires less power to run.
Monorail project is set to be started before the end of this year. It is planned to complete all the 3 phases within 2 years.
The monorail project authorities circles inform that monorail may start running in Chennai in 2 years!
