Central Government to decide on Chennai Metro Rail operations

Sources in Chennai Metro Rail say that the Central Government will decide the date from which the Metro Rail will be operated. It is understood that the date will be announced during the month of May. All the works connected with Koyambedu- Alandur elevated path are over and is ready for operations. Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) S K Mittal carried out an inspection of the Chennai Metro Rail recently. Mittal inspected operational control centre and the stations and the tracks between Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar. The CMRS inspected the operational control centre (OCC), where the entire network can be controlled Lifts, escalators, control rooms and ticketing machines at all stations between Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar were also inspected. The inspection report has been sent to the railway ministry for clearance. CMRL officials said the clearance would come in two weeks.
 
Meanwhile CMRL will discuss with the Central Government about fixing the tariff. After the rates are finalized, it is the understood the operational date will be announced. It is expected that the fares could be between Rs 10 and Rs 40 depending on the kilometers.
