Because of marriage season and insufficient supply of vegetables in the Koyambedu Wholesale Vegetable Market, the prices of the vegetables have gone high.
Vegetables which are brought to wholesale market in trucks from neighbouring States are sent to 64 retail outlets in Chennai. During the month of March, the prices of vegetables have significantly come down. The prices began to rise during the summer season.
At this juncture, the prices of onions, tomatoes, and beans have gone up between Rs 5 to Rs 15 when compared to last week.
Koyambedu Wholesale Market Vegetables Merchants Association’s adviser said, “Production of vegetables has come down because of the hot summer. Last week 4500 tonnes of vegetables were brought to Chennai in 300 Lorries. Since the vegetables productions have come down, vegetable supplies are brought in less than 250 Lorries. The demand for vegetables is also high because of marriage functions and temple feasts.”
