Aadhaar card not mandatory while applying for passports

Regional Passport Officer K Balamurugan while speaking to the media said, " Around 150-200 applicants come here every day from the Union Territory and its periphery. Hence he Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in Pondicherry will become operational by September end to benefit applicants from the Union Territory and adjoining Cuddalore and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu. It takes a maximum of 25 days to get a passport at the Chennai office, with police verification taking 20 days. We are working with the police to ensure that people have least trouble during police verification. We have conducted interaction programmes with field level cops in Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai and Villuppuram.Aadhaar card was not mandatory while applying for passports. Any applicant could walk into the Social Audit Cells at the RPO and get all information to be provided by the office as per Right to Information (RTI) Act, free of cost.”
