Concerned over the increasing number of human lives lost in road accidents, the Madras High Court has directed the State government to make wearing of helmets mandatory for two wheeler riders from July 1. Police have decided to implement this by posting police officials to check in 324 places. As per the statistics’, 60% of two wheeler riders lost their lives in accidents. 98% of these people died because they were not wearing helmets. Now even the pillion rider has to wear helmets. Tamil Nadu Government has informed the public that wearing of helmet by two-wheeler driver and rider is compulsory from 01.07.2015, failing which, all the documents of the two-wheeler including the driving licence of the driver shall be impounded under section 206 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The impounded documents would be released only on production of new ISI certified helmet with purchase receipt.
