Private vehicle owners need not toil for hours together in the toll gates in the National Highways because now a solution to this problem has been given. Ministry of Highways had made a proposal  aimed at bringing relief to commuters using private vehicles across the NHs by giving them a monthly or annual pass. The proposal is aimed at bringing relief to commuters using private vehicles across the NHs by giving them a monthly or annual pass.

Under this scheme, which is known as "shadow tolling", the discount will be available only for those who would install a smart tag named "Fastag" in their vehicles. Government would pay the differential amount between actual toll and the toll paid through the smart tag to the developers. This will mean the exchequer has to take a hit of about Rs 1,500 crore from its total kitty of toll revenue, which is ploughed back to build new roads.

Since NDA has come to power, the ministry has been trying to deal with the toll issue in the case of private vehicles mainly for political reasons. A number of proposals including allowing free passage to public transport and free travel for private vehicles only within a district have been discussed for past several months.
