Chennai will see high temperatures this week, according to weather experts. The temperature over the weekend took many by surprise, crossing 40 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature recorded in July was 41.1 degrees Celsius in 1915. Usually, the maximum temperature in July averages at 38 degrees Celsius, but it has has been 4 degrees above normal several times this year.
‘This record (from 1915) could be broken in the coming week... The city (is) experiencing what experts call the `break monsoon period`. From June 27 onwards, the monsoon trough began to shift to the foothills of the Himalayas, taking with it the cloud cover and moisture content’, said a blogger.
According to Y.E.A. Raj, Former Deputy Director General, IMD (Indian Meteorological Department), both cloud cover and sea breeze, two things that temperature depends on, has ‘failed us’. But, on the bright side, temperatures may drop after July 10th and the city may see some rain.
