In a recently undertaken survey, it has been established that Indian currency notes carry a lot of bacteria & germs.

It is notable that currency notes are one of the major carriers of germs & bacteria all across the world!

Scientists from the Institute of  genomics and integrative biology centre, functioning under the Central Science & Technology Research Centre, undertook this research on Indian currency notes recently.

For the first time, they employed the technology of ‘Shotgun Metagenome Sequencing’. This revealed the presence of 78 disease-carrying bacteria and 18 anti-biotic resistant germs!

The results of the research have been published in the popular medical  science journal ‘Plus One’.

It is found that out of the carried germs & bacteria, 70% eukaryote (fungi & protozoa), and 1% virus are contained.

As the currency notes are a little hard, the germs and bacteria tend to live longer on them! It is explained that the harms caused by these germs & bacteria depend on the number of time the currencies are changing hands and how much moisture is absorbed by the currency notes.
