National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on crime in India in 2009, Chennai ranks 34th among 35 cities across the country when it comes to crimes and offences committed against women. The data pertaining to 2009 issued by the NCRB reveals that around 25,569 cases of crimes against women were reported in the state as against a total of two lakh in the country.
The report is based on the number of cases reported in local police stations and takes into account crimes such as rape, eve-teasing , molestation , kidnapping and abduction, demands for dowry and cruelty by husband and relatives in 35 cities across India.
While Delhi, Hyderabad , Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Mumbai take the top five slots, Chennai is penultimate on the list, followed by Dhanbad.
Total IPC crimes highest in AP at 35.6 percent compared to the national average of 22.5.
Further, the state also had the highest number of cases relating to the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
