The experience for pedestrians around central stations is likely to change soon. Though there will be no change in the skyline of the city’s key landmark, there are so many changes to be made on the busy Poonamallee High Road. Four subways are set to be constructed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). This is aimed to connect people to the underground stations of the metro and 10 other important locations of the area.
Officials say in next two or three months, the design will be finalized and that the constructions will begin by the mid of 2016. These subways will replace the proposed plans of constructing 1.6 km skywalk as proposed by the CMDA.
The subway that runs along Ripon building to the southern railway headquarters will cover two metro lines and 3 other suburban stations. It will be easy for commuters to switch from buses to trains and the vice versa liking madras medical college, park MRTS stations, government general hospitals, wall tax road, central and moore market suburban station, etc.
Each of these subways will be 10 m wide so that it can accommodate good pedestrian flow, said a senior official of CMRL.
