Is the new rule of mandatory helmet fading out?

The rule that said wearing helmet is mandatory was enforced a fortnight ago, as per the direction from the Madras High Court. Motorists showed good response and followed the rule in the initial days and policemen showed vigor in inspecting the motorists and slapped cases against offenders.

Now, after quite some days of enforcement of the rule, there seems to be not the same zest in following the rule by the traffic police as well as the motorists. The fear in minds of motorist seems to be fading out as most pillion riders are seen empty headed, in spite of making helmet compulsory, says an activist at Mogappair.

They are seen to breach and set themselves free especially in the early hours of the day when traffic policemen are not found. And in fact, the same is the case during peak hours when policemen are found too.

Sharing his view on the case, a senior official says implementation of the new rule for two-wheelers has not slackened. In fact, the maximum number of cases with two-wheelers registered are for not wearing helmet.
