Water levels in the important reservoirs of Chennai are drastically coming down. Now there is a doubt that whether the water supply to Chennaites will be affected.
The reservoirs in Poondi, Puzhal and Chembarapakkam supply water to Chennai residents. The total capacity of these reservoirs is 11.05 TMC. Now as on Saturday there is only 1.02 TMC of water. That is only 10% of water is available.
Krishna water is not being released from Andhra Pradesh and because of this Poondi reservoir has become dry. There is news that Andhra has no intention of releasing water. The Veeranam Lake is the important one which supplies to Chennai city. The lake has the capacity of holding 1,465 million TMC but now there is only 800 million TMC water.
Apart from this, 10 Crores litres of water are brought from Nemmeli desalination plant. Another 7 Crores litres water are brought from 200 agricultural wells. Lakes are likely to fill because of the monsoon rains. But there is less rainfall this year.
83.4 Crores litres water is required daily for the Chennai people but only 62 Crores litres are being distributed. Water is supplied to many areas only on alternative days. Because of this people are greatly affected,
An official of Chennai Metro Water said, “We are immediately redressing the grievances regarding water and sewage problems. We also supply water in tankers where required. Steps are being taken on war footing basis. We are able to solve the water problems of the people through borewells and agricultural wells. When we are not able to draw waters from lakes, we use pumps to pump water. We are also planning to install tanks in various vantage points which will be helpful to the people.”
