On Independence Day this year, the United Kingdom will join 112 other countries that are part of India`s electronic visa system. This will allow UK citizens to get a tourist and recreational visa to India online. They need to carry a printout of the visa as proof.
The government has said that 7 more Indian airports will be designated for entry on e-Tourist Visa from the 15th of August this year. At the moment, the four main metros - New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai - are designated for the purpose. Come Independence Day, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Gaya, Jaipur, Lucknow, Trichy and Varanasi will be added to the list.
An official statement said, With this total number of designated airports will become 16. Since the launch of the scheme on 27/11/2014 more than 200,000 e-Tourist Visas have been issued till now. It is expected that this substantial addition of countries and airports will give big boost to tourism industry in the country.’
It is estimated that over 800000 British citizens visit India every year. The new service will come as a boon to those who wish to visit. The government expects to add other European countries to the list of online Tourist Visa applications. Some of them are Belgium, Hungary, Ireland, Monaco, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
Those who apply online will need to do so at least 4 days before the date of travel. The visa costs US$60 and has a validity of 30 days from the date of arrival in India.
