Congestion on roads

Posted on: 26/Aug/2015 6:00:17 PM
Not many roads depict commuter chaos more than NSC Bose Road. Apart from the heavy traffic created by the vehicles, there is about one lakh footfalls on this road each and every day. There are pedestrians, two wheeler riders, vehicles parked and vendors on this road during the peak hours.

Proposals are sent y the Chennai Corporation and city traffic police to bring under control the traffic and parking chaos. This happened following a public interest litigation that was filed in the court during the early days this year. This claimed that there was not any dedicated parking space for the dozen of famous restaurants present across the city. The high court says there is not enough discipline among the stakeholders, vendors, pedestrians, two wheeler drivers, or shopkeepers. This has prompted the two local bodies to focus on NSC Bose Road for the pilot study. If the ideas turn to be a success, it will be implemented in similar locations in places across the city. A time period of three months is given for implementing these ideas, says a senior official of the corporation.

A 700 m stretch road is redesigned with the help of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP). The stretch runs between Rajaji Salai to flower bazaar police station. Following this, the road gets narrower which increases congestion up to Wall Tax Rod. Officials say these will be studied later.

The congestion prevails between Parry’s Corner till Flower Bazaar even during non-peak hours, says Rajan.P who makes use of the road for reaching Broadway. The encroachment and haphazardly parked vehicles give rise to these issues. A two-wheeler parking slot was proposed to be set up near flower bazaar police station in the year 2012. However, the civic body is waiting for a consultant as nobody has come forward to take up the project.
