As the crops in Northern States are affected, the prices of all pulses including Bengal Gram have shot up.
Mr. Marithangam, a grocery merchant from Chennai, explained that Bengal gram was sold at Rs. 85/- to Rs. 100/- per kg during last October (2014). From that period onwards, the quantity of Bengal gram reaching Chennai had gradually reduced. Subsequently, the price went up and currently has reached double this rate.
Bengal gram was sold at Rs. 135/- per kg last month is now sold at Rs. 150/- per month in retail shops and Bengal gram sold in pockets is sold at Rs. 160/- per kg (from Rs. 150/- per kg).
Black gram which sold at Rs. 130/- per kg is now sold at Rs. 150/- per kg.
However, the price of green gram has not changed. Hence, green gram is continued to be sold at Rs. 120/- per kg.
Mr. Marithangam informed there are prospects of further increase in the prices of pulses thanks to the approaching festival season, temple festivals and the auspicious marriage days.
Palm oil is imported from Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. Palm oil is now sold at Rs. 48/- per litre from Rs. 45/-. Sunflower oil (1st quality) is sold at Rs. 83/- per liter from Rs. 78/-. Sunflower oil (2nd quality) is sold at Rs. 74/- per litre from Rs. 68/-.
Groundnut oil is sold at Rs. 110/- per litre from Rs. 100/-. Coconut oil is sold at Rs. 160/- per litre from Rs. 190/-. Agmark Gingely oil Rs. 190/- per litre from Rs. 220/-. Vanaspati is sold at Rs. 80/- per litre from Rs. 90/-. Gingely oil used for lighting lamps is sold at Rs. 75/- per litre from Rs. 100/-.
