The Consumers Association of India (CAI) has conducted a study of 14 samples of edible oil collected from across Tamil Nadu. Tests have shown that out of 6 packs of groundnut oil, only one of them had 10% of actual groundnut oil. The others contained cotton seed oil and palm oil instead. Just 36% of all samples tested had the mandatory license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and only 21% of these had the logo on the pack. The Agmark logo, which is also mandatory, was carried only by 21% of the samples.
An official from CAI said, Customers are targeted with cheaper oils that are sold as groundnut oil. We could test only six samples as it was an expensive process... We also tested a sunflower oil brand and found it contained cotton seed soil and palm oil. Consumers must read the contents on the pack and complain if not satisfied.
