Officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) have said that the construction of the station at the Chennai airport is almost complete, and that only interiors are pending. Most of the work has been completed. Only plumbing, electrification and a few other engineering works are still in progress which will soon be completed, they said.
The station is set to be one of the biggest in the city, spread over 17300 square metres. The only other city in India to have such connectivity is New Delhi. The Chennai Central Metro Rail station will have a check in facility in which passengers can complete the procedures necessary before heading to the airport by the Metro. The airport station is the last one to be completed in corridor II. This corridor connects the Airport to Washermanpet - a 23 kilometre stretch. Corridor I spans 22 kms from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount.
