A paper published in the journal Nature has said that global warming could change the shape of the planet. The research was conducted at the University of British Columbia. According to the paper, erosion of land has already affected the polar areas.
The researchers compared glaciers in Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula over five years. Results showed that the glaciers in Patagonia were faster in motion. They also caused more erosion that Antarctica.
One of the authors of the paper said, ‘Antarctica is warming up, and as it moves to temperatures above zero degrees Celsius, the glaciers are all going to start moving faster. We are already seeing that the ice sheets are starting to move faster and should become more erosive, digging deeper valleys and shedding more sediment into the oceans.’
