Zebra crossings in the city to get a makeover

The Chennai Corporation will introduce table top pedestrian crossings. These will enable those crossing roads to do so at the same level as the pavements. The move comes close in the change added to zebra crossings in the city. Some of them have been given a dash of colour and 3D effects.

A corporation official said, The new zebra crossings catch the attention of pedestrians and thereby spread awareness on road safety. Now, the tabletop crossing will increase visibility and make road crossing easy, especially for the elderly and the disabled.

The tabletop crossings will also double up as speed breakers. A report by the Corporation and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) showed results of studying road crossings and pedestrian safety. An ITDP coordinator said, Some of the medians on LB Road and RK Mutt Road are broken. Here, a refuge space has to be given for pedestrians to wait and cross the road. A different contractor will have to do this job, so it will take some time for it to be implemented across all bus route roads.
