Pedestrian woes, unfinished road work creates nuisance

Unfinished work on roads and underground cables are posing a serious danger to pedestrians and motorists alike. Trenches are covered carelessly by loose soil. There are open drains, something that is extremely dangerous, especially in the monsoons.

A resident of Arumbakkam has said that work on a sewer on 100 feet road has been going on for two months. It has now been abruptly halted for the monsoon. They are yet to lay the dug up road there. Instead, they have covered the entire site with soft sand that`s slippery. On Saturday, the entire area was flooded. We had to hold on to compound walls while walking`, she said.

Chennai Corporation`s 1913 helpline has received many calls this weekend due to the rain. Most of the complaints are for flooded roads. Some are to bring to notice open junction boxes and fallen lamp posts or trees. A corporation official said, We register these complaints and contact the concerned official. We are trying to shorten the response as much as possible.

An official from the Citizen for Safe Roads said, Although they (the corporation) have been doing a lot, even the 10 or 15 minutes they take to attend to a problem can cost a life... People (should not go) venturing out in the dark along unknown stretches. Those familiar with the stretch will know where a ditch is. Since lighting is an issue on many roads, it is advisable the person doesn`t walk in the dark.
