Flyovers in the two arterial junctions in Chennai city at Thirumangalam & Moolakkadai have been completed. They are awaiting inauguration by the state Chief Minister before being opened to public.
The flyover project in Thirumangalam commenced in 2010 and cost Rs. 60 Crores. Thirumangalam flyover will facilitate smooth flow of traffic across 2 intersections: Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue & Mogappair road junction at Jawaharlal Nehru Salai.
There was a delay in completing the project mainly due to acquisition of land and metro-rail tunneling work. The 805 metre long flyover will have 7.5 meter wide service road along with 2.25 meter wide pedestrian footpath on either side. This is the 1st 4-lane flyover to be built on a single pillar foundation.
The flyover project in Moolakalai commenced in 2011 and cost Rs. 49.55 Crores. This project also faced hurdles such as acquisition of land and shifting of water mains. This flyover will provide relief to motorists from Madhavaram, Manali, Moolakadai, and Vyasarpadi from the ‘never-ending’ traffic snarl.
Further, other 47 highways projects have also been completed and are to be inaugurated. Altogether, the total cost of these highway construction was Rs. 312 Crores.
