The civilian nuclear cooperation agreement that was signed last year by India and Australia is now ready for implementation. The agreement was signed when the then Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott visited New Delhi. The agreement will enable India to receive uranium for its nuclear reactors.

A spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs spoke to the press after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and current Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull . The PM thanked the Australian PM and said the nuclear agreement is a milestone and a source of trust and confidence. With the completion of procedures, including administrative arrangements, the Civil Nuclear Agreement will now enter into force, he said.

Australia has the largest reserve of recoverable uranium in the world, and ranks third, after Kazakhstan and Canada, in terms of production of uranium. The country itself does not have nuclear plants, but produces uranium for export alone.
