Following the rains and the steep rise in vegetable prices, 72% of the public has given up tomato and removed it from their daily kitchen needs.
With the upward trend of vegetable prices, ASSOCHAM conducted a survey on vegetable prices with women throughout the country.
1000 women from the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad participated in this survey.
Around 72% responded by saying that they have removed tomato from the list of daily required items.
In moist of the major cities in India, tomato is being sold at Rs. 55/- to Rs. 80/- per kg.
With the steep rise in Tomato price, the attention of the people have diverted to ready-made tomato purees and ketchups sold in shops. ASSOCHAM General secretary Mr. T. S. Rawat informed that the demand for tomato puree & ketchup has increased by 20% to 25% in the last one week.
The survey reveals that apart from the main vegetables, the prices of side-items like ginger & garlic have also shot up to Rs. 150/-to Rs. 200/- per kg. Again, this has increased the demand for readymade ginger-garlic paste available in the market.
ASSOCHAM survey reveals that the readymade products of tomato, ginger, and garlic service to be the major relief for the public.
