The government has set up the 104 helpline for medical queries. Now, if you have a fever and are not sure what the infection is, you can call the number and give your symptoms. Based on your information, on call paramedics will give you advise on what to do and the details of testing and treatment centres nearest to you.

One of the officials said, The health helpline, which functions 24x7, has geared up to deal with monsoon-related illnesses and has trained all its paramedics in the standardised advice that is to be given in these cases. If we feel there is an emergency and the resident needs immediate care, we will dispatch an ambulance. Our paramedics have been trained on all kinds of fevers as well as water-borne and respiratory ailments.

Officials have also started to take precautions to prevent mosquito borne and water borne diseases in lieu of the flooded waters. One of the badly affected places is the Institute of Mental Health. Patients have been administered medicines. An official said, All the 1,100-odd patients have been administered antibiotics, given nilavembu kudineer and sweaters. We are also in the process of installing mosquito nets on all windows. Most of the water has been drained out and none has entered the wards. We have had no outbreaks so far but we are also checking the chlorine levels and ensuring the water does not stagnate.

Not far behind are private hospitals. One such city hospital, that has been badly affected, has formed a team of medical personnel to deal with infections. In the meantime, we have taken several precautions - after all the water was drained out, we have been fumigating - his will be done three times... Snake repellent solution was used on the campus, all in-patient areas thoroughly cleaned and the water supply too was checked, said a doctor.
