Relief material that has arrived from Malaysia has been lying untouched at the Trichy International Airport for three days now. Customs authorities say that the sender did not provide valid documents, and so the cargo cannot be cleared.
The sender is People Trust, an NGO from Malaysia. They have sent relief for the flood victims in Cuddalore. These include napkins, milk powder and rice. A person who accompanied the 1.5 tonnes of material has said that he has been unable to release the cargo from the terminal building.
Customs and airport officials say, The passenger, who arrived here, did not authorise any person or organisation to receive the cargo at airport. He cannot distribute the whole relief material all alone... He had not produced the claimant name with proper document, the cargo could not be cleared without levying Customs duty. If he could not provide documents, he has to pay handling and cargo clearance charges.
Trichy Collector has said that he would look into the matter.
