Basic details about getting a vehicle driving licence

A driving licence is the only proof that the concerned driver had learnt driving through proper training and is capable of safe and good driving.

The licence also confirms that the driver is well aware and conversant with all traffic rules & regulations.

Even in case the concerned driver had been involved in illegal activities, this will also be mentioned in the licence.

Because of all above factors, it is very essential for a driver to have a proper driving licence.

How many years can a driver drive a vehicle?

Based on the physical health and age of the driver, he/she will be permitted to drive a specific number of years. This will also be mentioned in the licence.

Age limit for getting driving licence

The applicant for driving licence should have completed 16 years of age. They will be permitted to drive only vehicles below 50 cc capacity and vehicles without gear.
For getting a licence to drive vehicles above 50 cc capacity and to driver 4-wheelers, the driver applicant should have completed 18 years of age.

Light Vehicles

All 2-wheelers, autos, and car come under the category of light vehicles. In order to use these vehicles on public roads, an Identity Card has to be obtained. One should have completed 20 years of age.

Heavy Vehicle Driving Licence

Buses, Lorries and trucks fall under the category of Heavy vehicles.

To get ht eloquence to drive heavy vehicles, the driver must have at least 1 year experience of having driven light vehicles. Again, the applicant must have completed 20 years of age.

Academic qualifications for getting driving licence

For the driver who intends to drive his own vehicle for his own purposes need not have any academic qualification. However, if the driver intends to drive transport vehicles, he/she must have studied up to 8th Standard.

Procedure to obtain driving licence

For obtaining a driving licence, the driver will have to bring his vehicle`s registration number proof, insurance details, pollution control certificate etc. He/she  has to show driving the vehicle in frontnt of the examiner.

A fee of maximum Rs. 400/- will have to be paid for getting driving licence.

How to obtain international licence?

For people leaving abroad, they may need to driver vehicles while settling there. Hence, it is always advisable to get the international licence in India itself before leaving the country.

International licence can be obtained as per the agreement between India and other world countries.

This international licence will be valid for 1 year abroad.

Only if a person has a permanent licence, he/she can apply for international licence.

The relevant application should be filled completely and attached with the driving licence, passport, the visa particulars for the visiting country, copy of the flight ticket, medical certificate, and 3 passport-size photographs along with the payment fee of Rs. 100/-.

International licence will be issued on the date of application itself.
