Underground tunnels and structures in Saidapet being made water proof

The authorities of the Chennai Corporation have now started work on rain proofing or water proofing tunnels and underground structures in the city, especially those that are connected to the elevated line at Saidapet on the banks of the River Adyar. The move is seen as a result of the water released from Chembarambakkam reservoir.

Say sources, A polymeric waterproofing membrane was laid at the entrance of the tunnel in Saidapet before a layer of concrete roofing was laid over it the next day... The water-proof membrane was to prevent water seepage. There will be high moisture and water content on the river bank during rain and flooding. This additional layer will protect seepage into tunnels. This is part of the many steps being taken to ensure metro structures are protected from rain and floods.

An official has said that the inner walls of the tunnels are being treated with chemicals that will prevent air from damaging the structure, as well as making it water proof. We still expect some amount of water to seep in because concrete absorbs water, he said.
