Weekly freight train service between Chennai Port Trust and Marigold

Posted on: 12/Jan/2016 11:08:50 AM
Containers coming from overseas to Chennai harbour in ships are sent by Lorries to other places. Only lesser cargos are sent by train. Because of this there is heavy traffic congestion on the roads.

In order to resolve this, for the first time the first batch of containers through trains operated by the Gurgaon-based Distribution Logistics Infrastructure (DLI) was sent to Marigold CFS (container freight station), Bengaluru.

The flagging off function was held yesterday evening at the harbor. Poojai was performed for the engine. The freight train was kept ready. Chennai Port Chairman M A Bhaskarachar and Chennai Port Trust Deputy Chairman Cyril V George flagged off the first freight train.

The new service would give a boost to rail freight movement as it would take roughly eight hours to reach Bengaluru or Chennai. It would also save time and money.
