Over 23,000 applications for the MBBS course have been received from students this year in 17 medical colleges in the State.

Thursday is the last day for returning the form. The selection committee will release the merit list on June 21. The counselling for differently-abled people and those under sports quota will begin on June 30 and phase 1 of counselling for the MBBS begins on July 1. The government will offer 1,653 of the 1,945 seats in 17 medical colleges and 547 seats in nine private medical colleges.

"This year we will have a tougher fight because there is more crowd at the top," said selection committee secretary Dr Sheela Grace Jeevarathinam.

Expert education analysts predict that the cut-off for open category will be 199.75 this year against 197.50 marks in 2010 an increase of 2.25 marks. From July 1, the selection committee, in-charge of admissions, will call students as per merit and the rule of reservation.

This year, the number of students who have scored above 195 marks has nearly doubled compared to last year. A total of 3,317 students have scored over 195 marks as against 1,553 students in 2010. The number of students who differ by 0.25 marks has gone up three times, according educational analysts.
