There are 2 major Railway Stations Termini in Chennai Metro City over the last several decades – Chennai Central Railway Station & Chennai Egmore Railway Stations.
In order to ease the passenger congestion, Railways decided to convert Tambaram as the 3rd main train Station terminus and a inaugural function was celebrated a few days ago.
Southern Railway General Manager Mr. Vasishta Jori, informed that works on the 3rd terminus construction will be completed before June.
The General Manager also shared some information on 2016-17 Railway Budget. In this budget, Rs. 10.60 Crores has been allotted for the construction of the 3rd Terminus in Tambaram in Chennai Metro City.
Thus, Tambaram Railway Station is set to become a terminus.
Due to the heavy rains and floods experienced last November/December, progress of the project got delayed and now, it is expected to be complete before June.
All Chennai Suburban rail projects will be executed jointly with the state government. Discussions are being held with the state government regarding the acquisition of land and the related payment of compensation.
Generally, when the central government proposes a project, the land for that project should be given by the state government free of cost. The price of this land must not be linked to the project funds allotted.
However, the state government has objected to this, It insists that the cost of the land must also be included in the funds allotted for the project. This difference of opinion is likely to be solved soon and joint agreement will be undertaken by Indian Railways & the Tamil Nadu State Government.
We have also entered into a similar agreement with the Kerala State Government.
Rs. 11.6 Crores has been allotted in the budget for improving the essential faculties for the passengers in Chennai region. Madurai region has Rs. 9.3 Crores and trichy, Rs. 2.75 Crores. Improvement work on additional faculties will start soon.
Rs. 1508 Crores has been allotted for Tamil Nadu in this 2016-17 Railway Budget for introduction of new lines, widening of the tracks, and conversion to double-track systems. Last year, the allotment for this purpose was Rs. 1100.95 Crores.
