The total length of the Phase I of the project is 45 kms, Washermanpet to Airport 23.1 kms and Chennai Central to St.Thomas Mount 22 kms, initially nine trains will be deployed for operations from Koyambedu to Alandur covering a distance of 10 kms.
Now metro rail is being operated between Alandur and Koyambedu on elevated stretch. At this juncture, works connected with the Alandur-Airport stretch which is about 5.5 Kms has been totally completed in all aspects. Metro Railway officials and engineers have successfully completed the trial run. In this stretch of elevated path and underground path, the rails and electric connections were checked.
An official of the Chennai Metro Rail said, The service between Koyambedu-Alandur elevated stretches has been successful commercially. After this, trial runs were successfully conducted between Alandur and Little Mount. Currently the work connected between Alandur and Airport has been totally completed. The trial run under this section was conducted using the engine used for overhead maintenance. This trial run covered Alandur, Nanganallur Road, Meenambakkam and Airport stations. For the first time the trial run was conducted in the underground stretch for 1.4 Kms near airport. During this trial run, railway tracks, signaling, electric connections and elevated path were inspected and found satisfactory. During the end of this month we have decided to run the metro rail coach at high speed for testing purposes. After this, the Railway Safety Commissioner from Bangalore will make his final inspection and give his clearance. As far as underground stretch 82.84 percent work has been completed.
