Southern Railway plans to speed up integration of the Chennai Beach-Velacherry MRTS line with the network. This is expected to help commuters switch between the two modes of transport seamlessly and lead to a complete handing over of the MRTS line to the state-run Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).The proposal to merge the two networks was mooted a few years ago as both handle commuter traffic within the city.
A meeting was held recently to accelerate the process of merging both entities at the earliest.
Chennai Metro Rail will soon call for a tender for appointing the consultant. The function of the consultant will be to look into the matters of finance and administration and various other issues to make way for the merger. There will be several rounds of discussion between the officials of Chennai Metro Rail and the Southern Railway even before the process of calling for consultants. This process will take time.
