The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has mentioned that all the couplets of Arathupal and Porutpal of Thirukural should be completely taught to students of 6th class to 12th class from this academic year.
The Judge in his verdict has mentioned that teaching of Thirukural will enhance the knowledge and wisdom of students. Apart from this terrorism, crimes and alcoholic ill effects will come down.
A retired government servant S Rajarathinam had filed a petition in the High Court seeking to include 1330 couplets of Thirukural in the syllabus from this academic year.
In his petition he has mentioned, In the present situation conduct and discipline is becoming less. Especially among the youngsters the discipline of thinking about ethics and the respect for the elders has come down drastically. Hence the youth especially the students from 6th standard to 12th standard should be taught couplets of Arathupal and Porutpal of Thirukural.
If Thirukural is taught in young age, the society will have honesty and discipline. In the recent times, youngsters are involved in lots of crime activities. In order to reform the youngsters, Thirukural should be taught. This will make youngsters good citizens of the society tomorrow. Hence the Court should direct the education department to teach Thirukural in detail.”
The petition came before Judge R Mahadevan. On behalf the petitioner advocate A Saravanakumar contended the case. He said, The crimes against women, children have increased to unimaginable extent. Also, matrimonial disputes have increased considerably depicting once again the intolerant, dishonest and inhuman lifestyles.Under such circumstances, the court should direct the government to modify the school syllabus for Class VI to XII, so as to ensure that the students acquainted and learnt thoroughly all the 1,330 couplets of Thirukural.
The Government pleader V R Shanmuganathan while contending said, Thirukural is already included in the syllabus of the students. Apart from Thirukural other literatures are also being taught. Moreover, there is no duty on the state to agree to the request made by the petitioner and hence under the above circumstances, the writ petition should be dismissed.
After hearing the arguments, Justice R Mahadevan said that no other literary work than Thirukural can teach the moral values, so the government should include all Adhigarams of two sections in the curriculum of students.
