100 engineering colleges to be closed throughout India: Details on Tamil Nadu colleges

Over the last few years, it is quite evident that the desire among school finishing students to join engineering colleges has reduced considerably. The reduction in manpower, retrenchment of employees main and reduction in salaries are attributed to be the main reasons for this loss of interest.

There has been a phenomenal reduction in the interest shown by the students to join courses like MCA, B.Tech (Information Technology), B.E (Computer Science), and B.E (ECE).

As there is a sizeable reduction in the number of students, the colleges resort to drop these courses and some colleges are getting closed.

During the year 2015, applications were submitted to close 17 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu to AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). As per this, 9 colleges were closed.

As per the statistics released by Anna University, 60 percent of government seats quota in 33 colleges did not get filled during the academic year 2015-16.

More than 50 seats remained vacant in many courses in these colleges. So, more than 30 engineering colleges submitted applications to AICTE to close down the colleges during the academic year 2016-17 and also to close some of the departments.

In the 1st phase, approval was given to close 3 colleges - St John’s Engineering college in Pennathur, Vellore district, Sri Ranga Sankku MCA college in Morai, Thiruvallur district, and Vel Tech Ranga Sankku arts college. So, there will be no admissions in these colleges for the academic year 2016-17.

Karpaga Vinayaka College of Engineering and Technology in Kanchipuram will drop courses on B.E (Information Technology), and B.E (Production Engineering).Mamallan college of Technology will discontinue MBA courses.Danish Ahmed Engineering college will drop MCA course.

RMK Engineering College in Kavarappettai, Thiruvallur, will drop courses on MBA and VSLI Design.Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College in Coimbatore will drop M.E (software engineering).Einstein Engineering college in Tirunelveli will drop M.E (computer & telecommunications).Syed Ammal Engineering college in Ramanathapuram will drop B.E (information Technology) and M.E (Power Electronics).

As per this, AICTE has approved that 100 engineering colleges throughout the country will be closed. Various courses will be dropped in 284 engineering colleges.

Apart from the colleges which will be closed during this year, AICTE has released a list of approved engineering and technology colleges.

As per this list, there are 3284 colleges in the country offering B.E, B.Tech undergraduauate engineering courses. They offer 1553369 seats. There are 403786 professors employed.

There are 527 approved colleges in Tamil Nadu. The total number of seats including administration quota and government quota is 279217. 74435 professors are employed.
