Product details to be printed on 40 percent space of pack

The central government’s order to print expiry date and weight of product for 40 percent is to be brought to practice in the month of July. Most of the products sold these days including drinking water, masala items, oil, etc are sold in packets. No matter what product it is, the package should mandatorily consist of the manufacturer address, rate, weight, manufacture and expiry dates. If these details are not given in the packet, necessary action will be taken on the manufacturer and also retailers who sell the product to the public. Further, products sold will also be ceased.

However, not many of the consumers check expiry date while buying. This is because of lack of awareness. As the font size of these details are too small, buyers do not notice them.

Taking this issue under consideration, the ministry of consumer affairs has made revisions in law. Accordingly, each and every product should contain details of the product including manufacture date, price, net weight and consumer complaint number in a way that people can notice easily. Forty percent of the total size of the packet should contain these details. This new rule will come to existence from 1st of July.

Plea for time extension

The director of food wholesale distributor association, S.P. Jayaprakasam said there are contraries with the 40 percent space allocation as mentioned in the government order. It is not very clear whether these details should be printed on 40 percent of any one side of the pack or both the sides. There are no details given about the font size of printing.

Regional language

If a dealer is to sell his products across Tamil Nadu, it is unclear whether it is enough if the details are printed only in the regional language. A number of manufacturers must be already having labels printed and kept for use in near future. We need enough time to use these labels until they get over. A clear information about the new law is to be given. All doubts in this regard need to be clarified after which the law can be implemented.

The associate director of consumer association of India, R. A. Krishnan said that the central government has brought this law as a move to facilitate buyers with visible details on products they buy. So far, people have been keenly looking for such details. As per the central government law, all the details can now be seen in the same place. Consumers can refer it and decide whether to buy or not. This is definitely a welcoming move.
