Officials of Chennai Metro Rail have identified six possible routes. The total length of the six corridors is 177.3 km.

Metro Rail works are being executed in Chennai at a cost of Rs 20 Crores. The first phase of the project consists of two corridors (Washermanpet to Chennai Airport and Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount) covering a length of 45.1 kilometres. The train services between Alandur and Koyambedu commenced during the month of June 2015. Moreover, the metro rail works in Chennai are going on in rapid pace.

At this juncture the Metro Rail officials have identified six new possible routes. The routes are Red Hills to Siruseri, Light House to Poonamallee, Wimco Nagar to Sholinganallur, Pallavaram to Avadi, Vandalur to Pattabiram and Thirumangalam to Paruthipet. The total length of the six corridors is 177.3 km.

This is a preliminary engineering feasibility study on these six corridors based on parameters like alignment issues, presence of sharp curves, river and high tension transmission lines crossings and coastal, river flood zone restrictions.
