Speaker of the Legislative Assembly - The amendment act for MLAs to elect City Mayors passed

The Amendment to the Act for the Members of the Legislative Assembly to elect the city mayors has been passed.
This was announced by the speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
The Act was passed despite a very strong protest and opposition by the leading opposition party in the Assembly, DMK.
With this amendment, the members of the legislative assembly cn now elect the mayor.
132 MLAs supported the proposal/ 88 members opposed it. Following this, the amendment to the Act was passed by the majority votes in favour. Another proposal to conduct the local elections based on the constituencies was also passed.
