A 50-year-old shop-owner from Sowcarpet was allegedly shot dead by his 26-year-old relative in a room at a mansion in Elephant Gate on Monday night following a dispute over money.

The police on Tuesday categorically stated that he was shot and fatally wounded by a relative after a tiff over money.

The youth, Aasheesh Sharma, of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, had come to the city three weeks back.

“He travels around the country selling pooja articles. It seems he had borrowed Rs 8 lakh from Sudeesh Sharma for his business. The victim wanted the money back for his daughter’s marriage,” the police said after grilling Aasheesh the entire day on Tuesday.

Aasheesh claimed Sudeesh committed suicide but the gun was found on a shelf, away from the body. And the initial post-mortem report indicated that it looked like murder.

Aasheesh had told the police that he has a pistol licence from UP for safety as he travels around the country with money. “We have to verify his claim with the UP authorities,” the police said.
