The price of chicken in Chennai has shot up like a rocket and is sold at Rs. 230/- per kg.
Fluctuation of chicken price every day is rather customary in the city market. If it is sold at Rs. 150/- per kg one day, it can be sold at Rs. 130/- per kg the very next day. However, the prices of chicken have been rising steeply every day over the last few days.
Until the month of May, broiler chicken was being sold at Rs. 160.- per kg in retail shops. Some shops gave 4 eggs free for every purchase of 1 kg chicken.
However, since the start of June, the price of chicken has been pitched higher at Rs. 200/- per kg.
With the start of July, the price of chicken jumped up to Rs. 230/- per kg. This is a peak. The trend has shocked the non-vegetarians. With the rise in the price of broiler chicken in the retail shop, the hotels have followed suit and increased the prices of chicken items.
A wholesale chicken trader explained that only less quantity of broiler chicken arrives in the market for sales. Further, the prices of chicken feed have also gone up. This has led to the price increase of chicken.
There are prospects of the chicken prices coming down after Ramzan. Some of the concerns which supply broiler chicken to retail shops have stopped trading temporarily. This is another reason for the price
