Automated doors in train coaches will soon be fixed. Southern Railways hopes that this move will check footboard travel. Reports say that officials have informed the Madras High Court that the Integral Coach Factory has developed coaches with automatic doors.

The submission was made in response to a PIL moved in 2013 seeking a direction to authorities to take steps to control travel by footboard in trains, especially by students.

The plea came up for hearing before the First Bench of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan. During the plea, counsel for Southern Railway pointed out that a similar issue was dealt by a Division Bench of the Allahabad High Court in 2010. The Bench said it was for the railways to take steps for automatic closure of doors. Counsel informed the court that the Railway was in the process of developing coaches with automated doors.
