Recognizing its efforts to contribute in making its neighborhood healthy, Renault-Nissan Alliance has been awarded with UNICEF Appreciation Medal for Promoting Total Sanitation Campaign around its manufacturing facility in Oragadam in Kancheepuram district. The medal and a certificate of appreciation were handed over to company officials by the District Collector of Kancheepuram, S Siva Shanmugha Raja IAS at the Independence Day celebrations in Kancheepuram on Monday.
Working with the villagers in Oragadam, Renault-Nissan Alliance has identified lack of proper toilets as a major health concern in the villages around its Plant and begun working with the villagers since 2009 to reconstruct existing public toilets and construct individual sanitation units for households.
Jointly with Kancheepuram District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Tamil Nadu Government, the company has been implementing a Rs 48 lakh project to provide 310 individual toilets to families living Below Poverty Line (BPL) in two villages in Oragadam. Consequently, the Company has completed construction of 157 individual toilets by August 2010 in the first phase and handed over the units to the beneficiaries.
In the second phase, as many as 60 toilets were completed and another 15 units are under various stages of construction. Another 80 units are to be completed before the close of the year.
Commenting on receiving the UNICEF Award, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Renault-Nissan India Pvt. Limited, Mr Kou Kimura said, “We are delighted to receive this prestigious UNICEF Award as it recognizes our efforts to build a strong and healthy neighborhood around our manufacturing facility in Oragadam. We are sure that our humble effort to make the lives of our neighbors healthy will go a long way in setting up example for the rest of the industry. We would pursue similar initiatives, understanding the need of the people around our neighborhood.”
