Rameswaram is considered as South India’s Kasi. This is where the famous Ramanatha Swamy temple is situated.  It is the usual practice for people to pay obeisance to their forefathers at Agni Theertham. It is very special to pay obeisance on new moon day.

Right from the early hours today, lakhs of devotees made the holy dip at Agni Theertham. Then they paid obeisance to their forefathers. Deity Ramar was taken to Agni Theertham at 6 am in a golden chariot. Theerthavari was performed. To worship the deity at Ramanatha Temple, there was huge crowd standing in queue which was about 1 ½ kms. Devotees made the holy dip in the 22 Theertham of   Rameswaram.

The temple authorities have erected barricades near the Agnitheertham seashore to regulate the crowd and have made arrangements for providing basic amenities such as drinking water and sanitation. The temple was open at 3 a.m. and will remain open till 8 30 p.m. for devotees to offer worship.

Today Adi Perukku and Guru Peyarchi also coincides with Aadi Amavasyai.
