Power production was affected since the south west monsoon failed. TANGEDCO has hydro-electric power houses in Kundah in Nilgiris District, Kadamparai in Kovai District, Erode and Nellai. They have the capacity to produce 2307 megawatt. Of these, one unit power production cost is under 50 paisa. During the south west monsoon rains, the water will be stored in hydro-electric power house dams. When there is continuous rains, power will be generated in these power plants full fledged. During the normal season, the power will be produced only in the mornings and evenings.

At this juncture, the south west monsoon rains commenced during the month of June in Kerala. Since there were no sufficient rains, the water could not be stored in our dams. TANGEDCO official while speaking said: Hydro-electric power houses are situated in the Kerala border. Once the south west monsoon rains begin, the dams will be filled with water in few days. Kundah in Nilgiris District has the storage capacity of 18 TMC. In the nine important hydro-electric power houses the water was not filled even in half of the storage capacity. The same fate prevails in Kovai, Erode and Nellai. Because of this the has hydro-electric power houses which has the capacity to produce 2307 megawatts power is now producing only 500 megawatts.
