In the third major rail mishap in a span of two months, at least 15 people were killed and 72 others injured.
The Chennai Beach-Vellore Cantonment Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) train rammed into the Arakkonam-Katpadi passenger from behind as it was waiting for a signal at Chitheri station, about 90 km from Chennai, around 9:40 p.m. last night, police and railway officials said.
A railway spokesman said 85 injured people have been admitted to various government hospitals in Arakkonam and Vellore.
Although the exact number of casualty is yet to be ascertained, conflicting reports suggested that as many as fifteen people have been feared killed and over 100 other were critically injured in the rail accident.
