The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday decided to impose entertainment tax on direct-to-home (DTH) service providers and the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches.
A Bill, which was passed unanimously in the assembly, said DTH services will attract 30% entertainment tax, while 25% tax will be levied on IPL matches. The government also decided to increase the entertainment tax on cinema tickets from 15% to 30%.
"Entertainment tax has been levied on DTH service and on cricket tournaments conducted by IPL by some of the states. So we in Tamil Nadu decided to include DTH service and cricket tournaments conducted by IPL within the definition of the term “entertainment” and to levy tax under the Act,” said Commercial Taxes Minister SS Krishnamurthy, who moved the Bill which was adopted by a voice-vote.
