Vinayaka Chaturthi is the most important festival of Lord Sri Vinayaka. It is also called Ganesh Chaturthi, Pillayar Chaturthi, etc.

Every year, Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated on the Chathurthi Day of the growing fortnight of the Moon in the Tamil calendar month of Aavani. The day is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Vinayaka.

A mythological episode about the origin of Lord Vinayaka

One day, Goddess Parvathi Devi went for a bath. As there were no guards for security, she created  boy from the dirt off her body and asked him to stand as a guard. She strictly instructed him not to allow anyone inside.

Lord Siva, Parvathy Devi’s husband entered at that time. However, the boy did not permit him to enter. Lord Siva became angry and beheaded him. Only later, he came to know, the boy was Parvathy’s son and was afraid. He instructed his Bhoothgana (Ghost guards) to bring the head alone of the first creature encountered by them. However, they saw an elephant first. As per Lord Siva’s order, they beheaded the elephant and brought the head. Lord Siva joined the elephant’s head on the beheaded boy’s body and brought him alive.

Goddess Parvathi came out at last and after seeing the boy with the elephant`s head, she enquired, Pillai yaru? (who is this kid)?

The question Pillayyaru was assumed to be the name of the boy and he came to be known as Pillayar.
