100 wards have been earmarked for women in local body elections in Chennai

After the stupendous success of state assembly elections, the AIDMK is now getting ready for the local body elections. Now the tenure of the local bodies will be over on 24th October. The newly elected members should take charge on 25th October. the government is making all arrangements to conduct the elections at the earliest.
 
A bill paving the way for indirect Election of chairpersons of urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu, on the lines of Mayoral elections, was passed by the Assembly recently. Under the present system, chairpersons in urban local bodies like municipalities are elected directly by the people
 
The state assembly sessions which was going for over a month has come to an end. Political parties are gearing up for the local body elections.
 
As per the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (Amendment) Act, 2016, which was passed in February during the previous term of AIADMK regime, the quota for women in rural and urban local bodies was increased to 50 per cent from 33 per cent. Seats in local bodies, accordingly, have to be apportioned to women. Now the wards have been segregated for women. There are 200 wards in Chennai and 100 wards  have been earmarked for women.
