CREDAI workshop for construction workers

The Confederation of Real Estate Developer’s Associations of India, or CREDAI, has organised a skill training on skills in the construction sector and safety norms. The workers were also assessed on their skills, and those who cleared the exam were given a national level certificate that is equivalent to 9th grade pass certificate.
Speaking about this, a senior executive of CREDAI Chennai said, The workers were so joyous that finally, they had a certificate for themselves despite the fact that most of them have not had any formal education. This certificate could enable them to write tenth grade exams. These skills were not givens separately but at the construction sites of two builders so that workers could continue getting their wages. Such activities will ensure that productivity of the workers would be increased leading to high quality, reduced wastage and costs and low accidents on the site.
The training focused on safety and productivity.When asked, realtors said, The reason that most builders use workers from West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar is that they come cheap as they are unskilled. These training efforts could help them get better wages. Ironically, the construction costs in Chennai are the highest among the southern cities though the builders here use such cheap labour. The CREDAI training will help train the workers and also improve the quality of the delivered building. But such activities must not happen just once a year; there should be more frequent training sessions to benefit the workers as well as the industry.
