Union Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal launched `Akash` (a 35 dollar tablet) here on Wednesday.
Students of India have got a reason to celebrate as the much awaited ‘Sakshat Tablet’ has been successfully launched in India on Wednesday.
The 7” Aakash is co-produced by UK-based company called DataWind, and contains a 660Mhz CPU from Conexant Systems, 256MB of RAM, a MicroSD card slot (fitted with a 2GB card initially, and with support for up to a 32GB card), two USB ports, a webcam, WiFi connectivity, and the ubiquitous Google Android operating system, though only version 2.2. The touchscreen is also a resistive design, so there is no multi-touch support.
The device is set to be sold at a government-subsidized rate of Rs, 1,500 to 100,000 college students. For general buyers the tablet will be available at Rs, 3000. To market the initiative, Datawind is planning to sell the tab in partnership with telecom with internet services.
